The following appeared as part of an article in the business section of a local newspaper.

"Motorcycle X has been manufactured in the United States for over 70 years. Although one foreign company has copied the motorcycle and is selling it for less, the company has failed to attract motorcycle X customers "” some say because its product lacks the exceptionally loud noise made by motorcycle X. But there must be some other explanation. After all, foreign cars tend to be quieter than similar American made cars, but they sell at least as well. Also, television advertisements for motorcycle X highlight its durability and sleek lines, not its noisiness, and the ads typically have voice-overs or rock music rather than engine-roar on the sound track."

Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.

The writer of the business section of the local newspaper avers that a foreign company has failed to attract customers of Motorcycle X, a motorcycle brand in the U.S for 70 years, even though it is a ditto and cheaper version of the famous brand. He suggests that this failure to attract customers does not attribute to the noise factor in motorcycle X as inferred by some other people, but some other reason is responsible for the same. At first glance, this argument appears to be fairly coherent and cohesive. However, on closer examination, a number of flaws regarding the argument and the conclusion drawn come into light rendering the argument wholly unpersuasive.

The primary pitfall of the argument is that the writer of the article tries to directly correlate the motorcycle customer base with that of the cars. The two verticals in the automobile industry have been illogically compared by him.The characteristics that one looks to buy a car is totally different when one buys a motorcycle. For instance, the noise factor in motorcycles is an attractive factor for some people, but in cars people prefer the quieter ones.Hence , the analogy drawn by the writer between the foreign made quieter cars and foreign made motorcycle is not appropriate.

Furthermore, the writer mentions about the advertisements of motorcycle X to prove his point of noise not being a criterion for the sale of the Motorcycle X brand. He states that the advertisements focus on the sleek lines and durability of the motorcycle instead of the noise made by it, cancelling the noise factor as a reason .But, he forgets one important aspect of the Motorcycle X brand, that is it has been in the industry for 70 years now. The brand may have made enough recognition among the people, that it no longer needs to market on its noise making basis. So, it instead focuses on quality and structure of the motorcycle in the advertisements.

In a nutshell, the argument by the writer of the article in business newspaper regarding noise not being a factor on the low attractiveness factor of the motorcycle manufactured by the foreign company is not compelling and convincing enough. If the author wants to convince his reader on the arguments made by him, he needs to carry out proper comparisons between the entities. One cannot just compare apples with oranges and get away with it.
