Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The chart shows the variation in the number of Asian elephants over a period of seven years from 1997 to 2004. Overall, the highest number of elephants were found in India whereas china contained the least number of elephant.

Though the number of elephants declined in India from just below 10000 in 1997 to 7500 in 2004, the number was still far higher than any other countries in the chart. Malaysia and Thailand were the two countries where Asian elephants decreased by more than halves within seven years and finished the period at a count of around 1000 elephants each.China also followed the same trend and in 2004 it had the lowest number of elephants at 500.

On the other hand, Vietnam, Srilanka and Myanmar shared a common pattern of decreasing in the number of the elephant species but unlike Malaysia and Thailand, the drop was quite negligible. However, Myanmar was in the second highest position regarding the number of elephant and at the end of the period the number was almost half of the number of India's elephant population.

To sum up, except Cambodia and Laos, all other countries experienced a fall in the number of Asian elephants. The major difference being Cambodia where the elephant number showed a opposite trend and Laos where the number remained unchanged within this time period.
