IELTS essay: Should criminals be sent to a jail or let them do something else as punishment instead of sending into a jail? Why and give your reason.

"In the long march of mankind from the cave to the computer a central role has always been played by the idea of law - the idea that order is necessary and chaos inimical to a just and stable existence.", Malcolm N.Shaw said in his <International Law>, which is expressed unexceptionally in criminal law. But to the way of the punishment of chaos, there are two dominant conflicting views. Some people suggest that we should let these criminals do some works for ou society such as volunteer labour, while the others insist that only jail is the best place for those criminals. In my opinion, the former suggestion may be more suited for our society and my reasons are as following.

Firstly, letting these criminals attending community work can displace their mistakes by their social contribution. China has an old idion - atone for a crime by meritorious acts, which just represents this thoughts. This measure can give them an oppotunity to correct their activities and our society also can get benifits from their works. Therefore, it can be seen as a win-win proposal. Many western countries have adapted this suggestion and produced marked effects.

Secondly, the criminals can re-think about what they have done, what are their faults, and find themselves when they are working for our community. Psychological experiments have proved that people have an desire to do virtuous acts after we make mistakes and this desire will be more powerful when our mistakes are konwn by the other people. Because we need it to alleviate our private guilty conscience, rebuilt the vacilliated self-appearence and positive public appearence. The criminals also have human rights and want to rebuilt themselves in the future.

Finally, many criminals produce chaos in our society because they harbour misconceptions about "society". They are offen isolated from the community and lack off the others caress. Providing the chance to communicate with and to help the others can help them fusing themselves in the society, refinding the intrinsic spirits of our societ - love, happyness and helping with each other.

From the above reasons, we can see that the way of sending the criminals to do something else can bring many advantages. Many experts of criminal law believe that this way will lead the criminal law to the right direction.
