In the past, most population preferred to live in small villages than in large cities. There were some advantages and disadvantages of living in small community.

I believe there were four main benefits. Firstly, everybody who lived in small village knew everybody else, so the information about someone or something can spread fast. For example, when someone would get married, people would come even though without formal invitation. Secondly, people had strong relationship one another. Based on my knowledge, if one of community member got sick and had to admit in hospital, he would be visited by others in large amounts at the same time. Thirdly, member of community had high solidarity so that they help each other when they were in a problem. For instance, when a family built a house, then all the people will help with their own way. Such as, by deliver meals or even contribute their energy to build the house. Fourthly, in small community the values still preserved therefore their life peaceful. To hold the values, there are many rules created by community.

In my opinion, there were three of disfavors. Firstly, the information about outside environment was very limited. This case happened when people only relying on the source from other member of community. Secondly, the contiguity among the member caused lack of privacy in community. Thirdly, the rules in community sometimes make the people felt oppressed.

In short, although there were some disadvantages of living in small villages, people still stayed there and did not move to the city. In consequence, population in the city at yesteryear did not as big as in this time.
