Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion OTEC is a very well developed method to utilize ocean resources as a energy resource. The design of this system is purely based upon the fact that ocean water has different temperature range as we move down to ocean bottom.
In order to understand its working, we must first have a basic idea that there is a certain range up to which sunlight can penetrate ocean water , which is called the photic range. Thus, by taking this in account this module was developed. It mainly has three chambers namely; Evaporation chamber, Electricity production chamber and Condensation chamber. To start with the process, first seawater having temperature around 30 degrees enters evaporation chamber where the water gets evaporated as pure water and residual salt water heads down to another chamber. The pure water then enters electricity production chamber where it forces turbines to rotate hence producing energy which is then converted into electricity.
In the next step, the pure water after rotating the turbines reaches condensation chamber which is situated at some depth where the temperature is about 5 degrees . The water along with the waste salt water from first chamber, rushes outside this chamber and condenses the pure water which can be collected from the outlet. This process works in loop. This system can be called one of the best examples of non conventional resources of energy in near future if implemented properly.
