in the education system, assessment through written formal examinations is valid or not?

As a student, you couldn't be a stranger to examinations. From primary school to university, our life has been filled up with endless exams, such as maths, English, Chinese, physics and chemistry tests, and monthly, midterm and final tests. As long as you are still at school, you can never escape the fate of taking examinations. Written formal examinations have long become a necessary tool to assess whether students have worked hard and how well they have mastered what they are taught. And I do think it is valid and indispensible.
To begin with, written formal examinations can serve to push students to study hard. It is so common to see some students burn the midnight oil and study hard to cram for an exam, most of whom seldom take their studies seriously and kill time by playing computer games or watching dramas all the time, and even not attending classes. Only examinations can divert their attention a bit and get them starting studying.
What is more important is written examinations are a necessary tool to assess how well the students have mastered what they were taught. The ultimate goal of studying is to master and employ the knowledge you've learned in real life. One may find his/her weak points of learning during an exam. Things you don't understand or misunderstand and don't remember clearly would all be reflected on the test paper and score.
However, what I said above doesn't mean written formal examinations have no flaws. I do believe it is valid and necessary, but meanwhile, we should not overstate its importance and neglect non-exam tests. China's exam-oriented education has long become a target of criticism. And it is the over-focus on written exams that lies behind the issue. Not all subjects are suitable to adopt the written exams to assess students' ability, after all a football player cannot succeed in a testing room.So we should take a moderate approach-set written exams in accordance with the characteristics of subjects and improve students' practical ability.
