The first chart below shows the results of a survey which sampled a cross section of 100 000 people asking if they traveled abroad and why they traveled for the period 1994 98 The second chart shows their destinations over the same period

The two below charts compare data about the main reasons and the favorite destinations for traveling by British from 1994 to 1998.
It is apparent that both figures for purpose and destinations increased throughout this period. Besides, western Europe was the favorite place of UK residents, and holiday purpose was dominant for all reasons.
Moving to a more detailed analysis, in 1994, more than 22 thousand British came to different countries, and later this figure grew to approximately 29 thousand in 1998. In addition, business reasons, visits to friends and relatives, and other purposes were 3,957, 3,181, and 990 respectively in 1998.
According to the table, the places in Western Europe were the favorite destinations for UK residents, with 19,371, followed by other areas and North America, at 1,782 and 919 respectively. After five years, the number of people who came to North America doubled to 1,823. There was a sharp rise to 24,519 in Western Europe in 1998.
