The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The line graph illustrates how much carbon dioxide (CO2) was emitted by each person in four countries over the course of 40 years, starting in 1967.

Looking at the graph, it is obvious that the United Kingdom and Sweden experienced a significant decrease in the amount of CO2, while the figures of Italy and Portugal showed an opposite trend. During the given period, the UK is the largest CO2 producer.

In 1967, each person in the UK generated about 11 metric tonnes of CO2. It was followed by the figure for Sweden, which registered almost 9 metric tonnes. After reaching its highest point of more than 10 metric tonnes, the amount of CO2 emissions per person in Sweden saw a sharp decrease to below 6 metric tonnes of CO2 in 2007. The figure for the UK in the same year was about 9 metric tonnes.

By contrast, the CO2 emissions in the other two nations increased dramatically in the observed period. In 1967, each Italian person released just above 4 metric tonnes of CO2. The figure rose and overtook that of Sweden after 1987. From 1997 to 2007, Sweden witnessed a plateau in the amount of CO2 that each person emitted, which was below 8metric tonnes. Portugal registered the lowest amount of CO2, just above 1 metric tonnes, at the beginning of the 40- year period. The figure then went up sharply and reached more than 5 metric tonnes, which was the same amount as Sweden’s in 2007.
