The graph below shows the average number of UK commuters travelling each day by car bus or train between 1970 and 2030

The line graph compares figures for daily commuters using a car, bus and train during the period 1970 to 2030.

Overall, it is clear that car is the most popular of the three means of transport in the period shown. While the number of car and train commuters increases over the period, the number of bus users gradually decreases.

In 1970, there were about 5 million people travelling by car daily, compared to about 4 million and 2 million of train and bus commuters respectively. In the year 2020, the number of car drivers rose to just under 7 million and that of train passengers also increased to reach 3 million. However, there was a small drop of around half a million in the number of bus users.

In the year 2030, the number of people who commutes by car is expected to go up by another 2 million and reach almost 9 millions. Since 2000, the train usage remained constant for the following 10 years before continuing to increase steadily. It is estimated that at the end of the period approximately 5 millions people will commute by train. By contrast, the bus is predicted to be a less and less popular choice, with only 3 millions daily users.
