The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries
The given graph compares the proportion of the individuals 65 and above in Japan, the USA, and Sweden from 1940 to 2000 and envisages the percentage for the next two decades until 2040.
Looking from the overall perspective, it is readily apparent that although Japan witnessed the least percentage as compared to the USA which was at the highest position at the start, the same is expected to override others in the coming years.
According to the given illustration, to begin with, nearly 9% and 7% of the total population were the aged people in the USA and Sweden respectively, compared to 1 in every 20 people in Japan. In the next two decades, whilst the USA(10%) and Sweden(8%) rose steadily at a similar pattern, Japan observed a sharp plummet before reaching a plateau at 3% until 1990.
In contrast, the USA and Sweden experienced an upward trend prior to leveling off at 15% until 2000. Thereafter, Sweden followed by an erratic pattern, surpassed the USA and is predicted with second-highest rank, reaching a quarter, up by 5% than the USA. However, Japan will outweigh the others to reach a peak of 28% by 2040.
