The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.

The data given in the line graph depict the number of goods transported by four methods of transport in British over the span of 28 years.

Overall, while the figures for products transferred by road, sea way and pipeline witnessed upward trends, there was dramatic fluctuation in goods transported by rail way. It is a clear evident that people used road the most in carrying goods.

In the year 1974, the quantity of goods transited by road started at 70 million tones, it experienced slight oscillation before reaching a peak at just under 100 million tones in 2002. On the contrary, pipeline was rarely used for transportation, it transferred just round 5 million tones of goods in 1974. Nevertheless, this number increased sharply to approximately 22 million tones in 1995 before remaining steady until the end of the period.

The figures for products transported by rail and sea way stood at 40 and 39 respectively. However, whereas goods carried by train climbed rapidly to just over the initial quantity in 2002 after hitting a low of 25 million tones in 1995; there was a rocket in shipping. The figure for sea way shot up to 56 million tones by 1982, leveled out for next 10 years and dropped moderately before surging up to 65 million tones in 2002.
