Overall, it can be seen that road was the most popular modes to transported goods in the UK, whilst pipeline was the least popular among four.
To begin, goods transported by road and pipeline showed similar pattern, with both gradually increased from 1974 to 2002. However, the road transport was significantly higher than that of other modes of transport over this time frame. In 1974, goods transported by road stood at around 70 million tonnes, while only 5 million tonnes products were transported by pipeline. The goods transported by roads increased gradually until it reached a peak in the final year of around 100 million tonnes. Pipeline modes also increased steadily to finish at just over 20 million tonnes in 2002.
The water and rail transport began with the same leveled around 40 million tonnes goods were transported in the UK. In 1878 to 1982, the mode of water transport was slightly increased, and it remained same until 1990. In 2002, over 60 millon tonnes goods was transported by water. In contrast, the rail transport fall over the 20 years, and then it gradually rised to almost 40 million tonnes goods were transported in final year.
