The graph shows the number of complaints about noise to the administration of Newtown between 1980 and 1996 .
The chart illustrates the changes in the number of appeals about noise pollution from 1980 to 1996.
Overall, the number of claims about the nature of distracting sounds had significantly changed. The complaints about the road works were steadily decreasing. Meanwhile, those about factory noise were gradually growing, maintaining the same level till the end of the observed period. However, the number of city citizens' discontent with traffic and household noise wildly fluctuated.
In 1980, the highest number of complaints was due to road works (nearly 650), which then nearly halved to 1986. The discontent regarding household and traffic was at a lower level, at about 500 and nearly 300, but declined six years later. By contrast, complaints concerning factory noise followed an upward trend, indicating a rise from the lowest 400 early in the period to well above 700 in 1986.
Subsequently, the road works continued a downward trend, hitting bottom at almost 100 claims by the end. On the other hand, the number of appeals to the city hall about household and traffic had grown significantly after two years of stability. The figures went up to 1200 and 600, respectively. On the contrary, noise pollution produced by factories caused no more complaints, keeping the number at approximately 700.
