The graph shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.

The line graph presents the percentage of people who were aged 65 and above in three different countries namely the USA, Sweden and Japan from 1940 to 2020 and the predicted population in 2040.
Overall, it is clear from the chart that all the three countries moving in an upward trend. It is also interesting to note that Japan will become as the highest populated country, where as it had the least figure in the beginning.
Taking a closer look, in 1940, the highest proportion was shown by the USA at around 9%, at the same time, Sweden showed around 7% of old age population. From 1960, the USA and Sweden experienced a gradual increase to 15% and just under 15% respectively. Then the USA maintained this figure in a plateau, where as Sweden's population shooted up to 20%, a 5% increase within a period of 20 years since 2000. The anticipated old age population for the US and Sweden in 2040 23% and 25% respectively.

Japan had 5% elderly people at the beginning in 1940, which witnessed a reducing pattern and reached around 3% in 1960. Then they maintained it constantly for about 20 years till 1980. From 2000, they gradually increased and reached around 7% in 2020. They projected that the population of old age population will increase sharply to near 27% in 2040.
