THE GRAPH SHOWS THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATES IN THE US AND JAPAN BETWEEN MARCH 1993 AND MARCH 1999

The illustrated information in the line graph depicts how the level of joblessness changed in the US and Japan over a 6-year period. Overall, as can be seen from the chart, although the proportion of jobless people rose considerably in the US from March 1993 to March 1999, the rate of unemployment halved during the same interval.

By March 1993, the US had experienced the highest level of unemployment with 7%. Between March 1995 and March 1997, After some fluctuation, the proportion of people who were out of work fell to just above 5%. Then the trend had remained stable until the end of the period though there was some volatility in the last two years.

On the other hand, although Japan saw the lowest proportion of joblessness with just about 2.5%, this rate rose by 1 per cent after two years. As is observed, Japan followed a similar trend with the US in the last year from 1998 to 1999 with 5% of joblessness.
