The table shows that 11 per cent of the Australian population lived in poverty in 1999. This proportion, which is tantamount to 1,837,000 people, is divided into 6 family types. Couples with children comprise the highest number of people living in poverty, while sole parents have the highest proportion compared to other family types. Aged people overall had the lowest poverty rates among other categories.
12% of couples with children made up more than half of the households in poverty with 933,000 people; it can be attributed to the fact that this category comprised the highest proportion of the general population. Similar to couples with children, couples with no children had a significantly high number - 211,000; however, conversely, only 7 per cent of people under this category were classified as poor. Single households with no children and sole parents had the highest proportions of people living in poverty, with 19 per cent (359,000) and 21 per cent (232,000) respectively.
Single aged persons and aged couples had the lowest numbers with 54,000 and 48,000 respectively. Additionally, these categories had the lowest proportions of poor people: 6 per cent of single aged people were poor compared with 4 per cent of aged couples.
