Overall, all the countries followed a similar upward trend. Germany people spent most of their money on reading books and the figures for Austria went up significantly compared to other countries.
The amount of money spent on books by Germany gradually increased to 90 million in 1999 before slightly decreasing to around 85 million in 2003, finally, the amount raised just over 95 million at the end of the recorded period. While Austria spent the least money in 1995, the numbers then slightly raised to around 40 million and stayed relatively stable until 2001, followed by a dramatic growth to marginally above 70 million in 2005.
The money spent on books by France had a steady rise from just under 60 million to about 69 million in 2001 and finally climbed close to 75 million in 2005. The figures for Italy hovered from around 50 million to about 60 million until 2003, followed by a rise to just above 60 million in 2005.
