Process : How Biogas is produced.

The diagram shows the process by which everyday waste is transformed into fuel. Overall, the conversion involves 3 key stages and result in two-end products that can be used either as fuel or as a soil enhancer. The primary sources of biogas are landfills, livestock operations and wastewater treatment plants.

First of all, the biogas plant receives all kinds of organic waste such as food scraps, animal manure and organic industrial or agricultural waste. These are mixed together before being pumped into a sealed digester and heated to a high temperature, at which point they break down and give off a blend of gases, primarily (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2).

The biomass stays in the digester for 2-3 weeks, after which the biogas is released and used as electricity by local consumers for cooking, heating and lighting. The remaining nutrient-rich solid matter, known as ‘digestate’ can subsequently be watered down and used by farmers and gardeners in order to boost crop yields and to provide bedding for animals.

Finally, the biofuel is converted into biomethane so that it can be utilized to power cars. It is also sent into the power grid for wider distribution. Biogas generation recovers waste materials that would otherwise pollute landfills and does not require fossil fuel extraction to produce energy.
