The given table illustrates the number of qualifications for English Language Teachers who obtained in two academic years, 2007/8 and 2008/9 in the UK; with the specific focus on male qualifiers.
Overall, as can be seen, the total qualifications for English teachers increased slightly in 2008/9, whereas the percentage of male gaining certificates was a slow decrease in the same period. Another visible trend is that TEFL was the most popular certificate for students in the UK .
In the year 2007/8, the total number of students who qualified was 32930, with only 8165 male students. The figure for 2008/9 was higher, and out of a total of 32945 students, only 22,7% were male and lower compared to 2007 (24,7%).
17,3% of male students qualifying Cambridge UCLES CELTA & other degrees with only 1295 male out of 7484 students in 2007, in comparison with 12,1% of them were male in out of 8028 England students in 2008. The number of students who gained TEFL certificate (25446 students) was over three times the number who qualified Cambridge UCLES CELTA & other degrees in 2007/8. The period from 2007/8 to 2008/9 witnessed a small decline in total students obtaining TEFL degree. There was a drop of 0,7% in the number of male who gained this qualification.
