The given tabulated data illustrates proportion of different categories of families living in poverty in Australia in the year 1999.
In general, what stands out from the data is that a family that includes a couple with children seems to posses the largest amount of people in the group whereas family of elderly couple is found least in the number. On average, 11 per cent of all households, consisting approximately two million people live in poverty in Australia.
The number of elderly people living in poverty is 98,000. 54,000 whom are senior citizen and still single and rest of them are senior couple. Regarding the individuals with no children is in greater quantity than the family who are sole parents; the number is 359,000 and 232,000 respectively. The inverse relationship is found in overall percentage, while the single and non-child families contribute 19%; the single parent contributes 21% to total household population.
It has been observed that the number of couples with children living below the poverty line is more than 5 times the number of couple having no child. Both forms of household contribute 7% and 12% of the total household population living in poverty.
