General Writing Sample Task 1 #58 You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. You are a student at an English language school in Brighton and are living in private accommodation with other flat mates. You have not had hot water or heating for some time. The landlord’s workmen have tried to fix the problem but without success. Write a letter to the landlord. In your letter,
* state your reason for writing
*describe the problems and explain how you feel
*propose a solution and risk the landlord to take action
Dear Mr Whitman,
I am writing to complain regarding some of the broken facilities you have failed to fix. Last week me and my roommates complained to you about the broken heating system in the flat that you have rented us.
We have been having troubles with getting hot water for bath and the temperature inside the apartment is really unbearable since it is the middle of winter season. We are practically freezing at night and have not had a good night’s sleep from last week onwards. We are distraught and it has been a nightmare. We had to cuddle under a bunch of blankets and even then the cold was unbearable.
I think it is best you replace the heating system altogether instead of trying to fix. Your workers tried to repair the heater and it only worked for a couple of hours. We tried calling them and they said they are unable to fix the boiler permanently because it was a cheap one that is easily damaged. I do not see any reason as to why we should continue paying the utility bill for heating system when it is not even working properly. Moreover, we might have to resort to legal action for the emotional stress we sustained during last week along with a refund for last week’s rent.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely
Depa
