Advantages and disadvantages of public transports Discuss both sides and give necessary examples

Essay topics:

Advantages and disadvantages of public transports. Discuss both sides and give necessary examples.

As traffic congestion continues presenting numerous challenges to cities around the world, many countries have developed and expanded their metropolitan public transport networks as a long-term alternative for commuters. While the public transit system can bring about various benefits, it still possesses several inherent drawbacks that cause many people to feel reluctant to use it frequently.
One of the most significant advantages of public transport is to help reduce the number of private vehicles running on the streets, thus relieving the pressure of traffic congestion placed on urban infrastructure. Since it is almost impossible or extremely costly to build and expand streets in the central areas, cities have been invested heavily to construct and optimise their public transport networks such as bus lines, undergrounds or ferries. If the majority of people choose these means of transport rather than their cars or motorbikes, it will be highly likely that traffic blockages together with its problems can be solved, at least partly. Another positive aspect worth mentioning is that frequent use of public transport can help constrain air pollution, which is primarily caused by emission from private vehicles in urban areas. This can be demonstrated by an example that some metropolitans, Singapore for instance, have been taxing private cars for environmental impact and have used this amount of taxation to sponsor for the public transport system by reducing ticket price to encourage people to use this mean of transportation instead. In addition to that, unlike many cars or motorbikes which use fossil fuel, most of the mass transit vehicles are powered by more environmentally friendly energy sources such as electricity or even solar energy.
On the other hand, public transit can pose certain disadvantages that make many people refrain from taking it regularly, and one of these negatives is the reliability of the system. In many countries, especially the developing ones, the public transport network is managed and operated inefficiently and ineffectively with frequent late departures and, as a result, late arrivals. Consequently, commuters gradually switch to their vehicles since they could no longer rely on public transport. As well as that, not all city residents may feel convenient travelling by public transport. One problem is that the service is ineffective to some people, in more detailed, their houses are too far from the station, or their intended destinations are not well connected with the transit network. Additionally, public transport vehicles only operate in a specific time frame; hence for hours outside this period, travellers have to seek for other alternatives.
All things considered, while public transport plays a crucial role in alleviating traffic congestion and reducing air pollution in urban areas, its effectiveness is restricted by the reliability and the convenience of services it provides. I believe that with sufficient investment and improved management, these drawbacks can be adequately managed and that in the future, the positives brought about by public transport will outweigh the negatives.
