Nowadays we're producing more and more rubbish. Why do you think this is happening? What can the government do to help reduce amount of rubbish?
These days people produce more wastage than ever before. In my opinion, the main reason for this development is excessive consumerism. Still, the situation might be improved, as long as the government steps in with a multifaceted approach: supporting green solutions and educating masses.
Firstly, growing consumerism, availability of products and increased advertising often lead to change in shopping habits. As a result, individuals tend to no longer buy only what they need, but also to purchase a lot of unnecessary items, especially food, what in turn generates waste on an unknown scale. According to the figures presented at the 2019 Biodiversity Conference in Manchester, 78% of all household rubbish is made of food wastage. In addition, most of the products are wrapped in plastic, which is not widely recyclable and commonly ends in the landfill, exacerbating the situation.
Irrespective of the reasons for the increased amount of generated rubbish, the government should take immediate action to tackle the issue. One way might be to support green incentives, which with some ingenuity would encouraging companies and ordinary citizens alike to reduce the amount of the waste. It has to be closely connected with environmental education. For example, since 2015 British primary schools curriculum includes subjects of recycling and reusing, and already shows a change in children's attitude towards household rubbish. This multifaceted approach of the government might be the leading change that is needed to reduce the wastage.
In conclusion, although the growing consumerism might lead to increased production of rubbish, there are ways for the government to help tackle the problem, namely by encouraging green incentives and educating children.
