Based on the given materials, the article and the lecturer discusses genetically modified trees. The author states that these trees can contribute to solving some economic problems as well as preventing natural resources depletion while providing more products. Initially, the author says that these trees are less vulnerable than natural trees which results in an increase in their survival rate; However, the lecturer explains that these kind of trees might be hardier in one condition but at the same time is more influenced by other situations. For example a tree may survive bad climate condition but vulnerable to pests. A natural tree can survive different conditions using diversity so if most of the population annihilate as a consequence of a crisis some will survive while a genetically modified tree will perish completely as a result of encountering with a certain situation.
Second, the writer proclaims that a genetically modified tree is more economically beneficial. The writer states that these trees can produce more products since they are genetically modified comparing to natural ones. The more the product, the better the income. Yet again, the speaker underscores that by mentioning these seeds have hidden costs. The seeds of these trees are much more expensive than a natural tree and the companies providing the charge farmers more. Also there is a law that states, farmers should pay companies providing these seeds after collecting new seeds from the old ones for planting them.
The final point of contention between reading and listening passages is these trees can be a solution to depletion of forests as a result of high demand in wood for building and firewood since they grow up fast. the author thinks these genetically modified trees can keep up the pace with trees that are cuted down. On the other hand, the speaker explains that as these trees are planted among natural trees, they can out compete them and result in their destruction. The genetically modified trees use all the sources available such as nutrient in soil and water in order to grow up fast and as a result the natural trees can not compete with them and receive fewer nutrients which causes their death.
