Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons.
The reading passage claimed the statement that it is appropriate and suitable for human beings to colonize on asteroids in the universe. However, the lecture totally held the opposite point that there actually exist many limitations which make the implement unavailable.
First, the passage stated that the low gravity on asteroids make the landing for spacecraft easier and safer; moreover, the fuel problem would also be lightened. However, the passage mentioned that despite such advantages there also remain sever risks. Inhabiting on asteroids for a long period of time would cause human muscle and bones to loosen their density, which may cause a sequence of severe health problem.
Second, the essay indicated about the innumerable natural metal resources on asteroids which is in very hard to discover on earth including gold and platinum. However, from the absolutely opposite perspective, the lecture illustrated about the high cost of drilling these precious metals as well as transporting. Even if a vast number of them can be transported to earth, as the supply ascend, the market demand will also follow the trend, which will in turn make the price of them to decrease.
Third, the passage stated that it is of great convenience for human to get approach to the asteroid in the universe based on the low distance between asteroid and earth. However, from the lecture, the professor claimed a fact that the distance will just remain temporarily. Although it may be very easy to reach to the asteroid, the return journey would be very different. The asteroids move in their particular orbit, and only when it comes to the nearest point will human sent their probes. As the asteroids moving far away, it will make the return journey become extremely costly.
