Essay topics:

The cane toad is a large (1.8 kg) amphibian species native to Central and South America. It was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1935 with the expectation that it would protect farmers' crops by eating harmful insects. Unfortunately, the toad multiplied rapidly, and a large cane toad population now threatens small native animals that are not pests. Several measures have been proposed to stop the spread of the cane toad in Australia.

One way to prevent the spread of the toad would be to build a national fence. A fence that blocks the advance of the toads will prevent them from moving into those parts of Australia that they have not yet colonized. This approach has been used before: a national fence was erected in the early part of the twentieth century to prevent the spread of rabbits, another animal sS
pecies that was introduced in Australia from abroad and had a harmful impact on its native ecosystems.

Second, the toads could be captured and destroyed by volunteers. Cane toads can easily be caught in simple traps and can even be captured by hand. Young toads and cane toad eggs are even easier to gather and destroy, since they are restricted to the water. If the Australian government were to organize a campaign among Australian citizens to join forces to destroy the toads, the collective effort might stop the toad from spreading.

Third, researchers are developing a disease-causing virus to control the cane toad populations. This virus will be specially designed: although it will be able to infect a number of reptile and amphibian species, it will not harm most of the infected species; it will specifically harm only the cane toads. The virus will control the population of cane toads by preventing them from maturing and reproducing.

Recently there has been a controversy on the prevalence of cane toads. More specifically, in regard to the reading passage, the writer put forth three measures on how the cane toad could be controlled in Australia. The lecturer is quick to point out that there are some serious flaws in the writer's claim. In fact, he believes and addresses in detail the trouble with each claim made in the reading text.

First and foremost, the author states that the construction of the national fence will eventually serve as a bulwark to stop the growth of the amphibians. The lecturer, however, stands in firm opposition to this claim. He states that young toads and toad eggs are found in the stream and because flowing through each other will be very difficult. Therefore the national fence won’t serve as a protective measure.

Secondly, the writer claims that people can hire volunteers to eliminate the toad. Some professionals in the same field, however, believe this is not accurate. Again, the speaker addresses this point when he states that inept volunteers would be unlikely to destroy the frogs because the majorities are lethal most especially the young ones.

Finally, the author brings his argument to a close by suggesting that humans can eliminate the toad population by innovating pathogenic virus diseases. Not surprisingly, the professor rebutted this notion by asserting that Australian reptiles and amphibians are transported to other continents, therefore the results will eventually be on thin ice. Moreover, viruses will attack cane toads to destroy the ecosystem. With this, the ecosystem will be in distress.

To sum up, both the author and the speaker hold conflicting views about eliminating cane toads. It is clear they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.S
