The cane toad is a large 1 8 kg amphibian species native to Central and South America It was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1935 with the expectation that it would protect farmers crops by eating harmful insects Unfortunately the toad multi

Both the reading and listening discuss the can toads, which are indigenous in Central and South America and introduced to Australia to protect crops from insects. The Author believes that there are three possible strategies to stop the proliferation of can toad. The lecturer challenges that claims made by the author. She is of the opinion that none of these strategies are successful and it might cause ecological damage.

To begin with, the author suggests that creating a national fence is an effective method to control the spread of can toad by stopping its movement to other parts. The Lecturer challenges this specific argument by asserting that the national fence will not stop their spread, since the young can toads and eggs are available in the river streams. Based on that, water can carry them from one side to another and they can establish there and grow. Thus, the national fence is ineffective way.

Secondly, the writer argues that the second strategy is that volunteers can easily catch and destroy the can toads especially, the young ones and eggs by hand and simple traps. The lecturer, however, rebuts this claim by explaining that the massive volunteers might catch the young endangered Australian frogs while they catch the can toads. Since, it is very hard to differentiate between young frogs and young can toads. As a result, it is very harmful.

Finally, the author posits that creating a virus that can cause illness to the can toads can effectively stop their spread. The lecturer, in contrast, casts doubt on this point by pointing out that this is a very bad idea and it has terrible consequences on the can toad population in America. In other words, the amphibian and reptiles species can be transported from Australia to other continents including America. This virus can infect the native can toads and have a devastating effect on them. Native can toads are a vital parts of the ecosystem and the whole ecosystem will suffer, if they get destroyed.
