Dinosaurs were endotherms during the fossil period.
The passage says that dinosaurs were endotherm, judging from their living environment, leg position, and bone structure. However, the professor considers these arguments unconvincing.
First, living environments. The passage says that dinosaurs fossils have been found in polar regions, cold areas where only endothermic animals could survive. However, the professor argues that the discovery cannot prove that dinosaurs had lived in the areas endotherm-only, because weather in the past was warmer than today, warm enough to make non endotherm also live. Even in cold weather, she adds, dinosaurs could have developed other survival strategies—migration and hibernation.
Second, leg position. The passage states that unlike crocodiles’ legs at their bodies’ side, dinosaurs’ legs are under their bodies for running, fitting the feature of all endotherm. However, the professor argues that their leg position is not necessary for running, but for supporting weight. Dinosaurs’ legs positioned under the bodies, she explains, make them grow bigger to become a dominated specie.
Third, bone structures. The passage claims that dinosaurs’ fossils have Haversian canals, bone structure for rapid growth in cold, one of characteristic present in endotherm. However, the professor argues that although having Haversian canals, dinosaurs’ fossils also have growth rings, the structure used for stopping or slowing growth in cold. These rings, she emphasizes, caused dinosaurs’ periodically fluctuating growth, rapid growth in warm but no or slow growth in cold, contradicting the endotherm’s feature of still growing quickly in cold, so dinosaurs were not endotherm.
