Eco certification and American wood companies (Integrated)Reading Section: In an effort to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices, an international organization started issuing certifications to wood companies that meet high ecological stan

The lecturer talks about Eco certification of wood products by american companies. He is of the opinion that despite claims that American companies will definitely certify their products despite the contrary claim stated in the reading passage.

First, American buyers don't treat all advert claims as same. That is, they distinguish between advert
claims made by companies and those made by independent organization. He argues that consumers will find advert by internationally certified independent bodies trustworthy. This directly contradicts the claims made in the passage.

Second, price alone isn't the only motivating factor. While, the passage states that American consumers are more likely to be motivated by price, and therefore they are likely to choose cheaper uncertified wood products, the lecturer rebuts this claim. He states that consumers are more concerned about price when the difference between two competing product is large say above 5%. Because the additional cost to be inquired from certification of wood products will be less than 5% consumers will still feel interested in Eco certified woods especially now that Americans are becoming more interested in protecting the environment.

Although, the passage states that american wood companies have a large market of local consumers who are pleased with the current product and as such need not worry about attaining certification. The lecturer contends that to meet up with competition these sellers will need to be certified because if local consumers become interested in certified wood products then international companies will take hold of the market base.
