The author in the passage states that mass extinction occurred at the end of the Triassic period 200 million years ago which as several possible theories. Three prominent factors stated in passage are fluctuating sea levels, massive climate cooling and asteroid strike. However, the speaker disagrees that these three factors caused the mass extinction and elaborates why these factors might not be responsible for it.
While the passage states fluctuating sea levels might have destroyed the species living in shallow ocean and coastal area , the speaker says that it might not be responsible for mass extinction because this factor needs to be sudden and the species in the shallows and coastal were quite adaptable for slow and gradual changes.
On global cooling, the author disregards the theory of passage and gives his explanation as follows. The global cooling occurred for relatively short period which wasn't enough to cause mass extinction. The SO2 released by volcanoes stayed for relatively shorter time in atmosphere as it combines with water and causes rain.
Finally, the speaker says that the asteroid strike occurred about 12 million years before extinction is not responsible for extinction of animals and plant species.
Thus, the speaker successfully refutes the possible extinction factors by giving his explanation.
