In the reading, the author claims that smart cars will provide safer, quicker, and less expensive driving. However, finding all the advantages questionable and implausible, the lecturer repudiates the claim and presents some evidence to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that smart cars are much safer since they prevent many accidents occurring each day and therefore they can save lives effectively. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that smart cars still get to some accidents. Since new advanced technology lets cars drive tightly packed together on the roads, the possibility of accidents will increase. After all, no evidence has been presented so for to collaborate the idea which smart cars reduce the number of accidents.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that employing smart cars will eliminate the traffic problems and its congestion because it will result in a growth of highway speeds. That being said, the lecturer disputes this benefit by clarifying the fact that if people feel using smart cars is more comfortable, they will use it too much so that the number of cars driving on the highways will be increased. It goes without saying that these additional cars lead to congestion and make people spend a considerable amount of their time in traffics.
Finally, the author draws attention to reduction in costs such as less expenses for repairing routes or changing cars’ accessories like tires. Yet again, the lecturer dismisses it by pointing out that using global positioning system is highly expensive. Moreover, the sensors used in these cars are costly too. Hence, the added expenses by using these new devices and technology will be more than the money saved by less repairing roads or changing tires and other essential things.
