golden frog
The reading and the lecture are both about the effort to save endangered species of golden frog. Whereas the author suggests that there are some ways which can help us to save golden frogs from fungus, the lecturer states that these solutions are not effective. The lecturer casts doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
First of all, according to the author, a chemical release by specific bacterium can save the frogs if it`s colonies are injected into the frog`s skin. However, the lecturer disputes this point. He says that this process will not work. He agrees that introducing bacterium has positive effect, but it is not long lasting. Furthermore, he mentions that bacterium will produce chemical early, and it will stop producing chemical after a brief period. So, the effect will be temporary.
Secondly, the author provides one more solution that by breeding golden frogs in captivity will result in disease-free species which can replace wild frogs, and can produce fungus free golden frogs. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. He argues that if we breed those frogs then new population will not stay healthy. He points out that other organisms might carry the same disease, and those healthy frogs might get infected when they come in contact with those infected wild animals.
Finally, the author claims that golden frogs can use their natural defense system by rising their body temperature, which will decrease the fungus growth. On the other hand, the lecturer thinks that this solution also has a drawback. He believes that frogs have to invest a large amount of energy when they will increase their body temperature. In addition, this activity weakens the frogs, and they will die quickly. Therefore, they will not remain strong and healthy anymore.
