Both the reading and the lecture are about the correct function of a set of clay jars discovered in Iraq in the past. The reading passage, by means of presenting three major reasons, claims that it is not probable that these vessels were used as electric batteries. The professor, however, refutes all of the evidence stated by the text, mentioning that the argument posited by reading is not convincing, and they are not well presented.
First of all, the author brings up the idea that since the vessels did not attach any electrical conductors like metal wires, they were not used as electric batteries. This specific argument is challenged by the professor that the vessels were found by local people, not archeologists. So probably they have discovered other materials near the jars, but, since they have not recognized their importance or they might seem uninteresting to them, they have thrown them away.
Secondly, in the article it is said that, copper cylinders inside the jars were similar to those found in Seleucia, representing that they were used for holding scrolls not as batteries. The speaker, in contrast, states that, although they exactly looked like each other, but, this does not prove anything. She explains that it is possible that those copper cylinders were designed to preserve scrolls, but some ancient investors discovered later that they can fill the jars with liquid and use them as batteries by producing electricity. Actually, that time was the first time that human being was able to produce electricity. She then, mentions that, at first people made and used clay jars as preservers for sacred texts, but then they adapted for another purpose.
At last, the essay underlines the fact that ancient people had no devices that relied on electricity, and these batteries were useless to them. On the other hand, the professor argues this assertion and states that these batteries produced a kind of shock when a person touched them. She describes that this fact can be interpreted that these devices can produce invisible power, and the owners of them could convince people that they had magical power. Moreover, people used them for healing because by producing electricity current, they could relieve pains, and also doctors used those batteries for the same purpose.
