The reading passage emphasizes on negative effects of receiving information and news from electronic devices. The lecturer evidently refutes the claims made in the passage.
The first point that the lecturer makes is about the critical thinking which he believes will be improved by reading news and information from electronic media. According to the passage, critical thinking will be disturbed due to the novice views of the author of the information on the internet and also questions the credibility of the information. To which the lecturer responds by saying the due to the different perspectives of the people across the internet about the news, critical thinking of the reader will be improved.
Secondly, the passage mentions the negative side effects of electronic devices on people’s health, especially on the eye and brain. However, the lecturer points out that, if the reader of the electronic devices takes regular breaks while reading it will not do any harm and also he questions the claims by saying that there was no evidence to support these negative effects are caused due to reading from electronic devices.
Lastly, the passage point on electronic devices causing addiction and blocking communication between people is turned down by the lecturer by saying that by using the internet people will get to know more about other people's lives and will have knowledge on various topics, which can be used while discussing with strangers. So lecturer points out that electronic device will increase people's social skills.
In this way, the passage and lecturer views are contradicting on the people getting information, news from electronic devices and newspapers.
