Both the article and the lecturer discuss causes of "quackers", which is explained to be unidentified sound underwater. On one hand, the article shows the plausible causes of the phenomenon. On the other hand, the professors refutes each of the arguments from the reading respectively.

First and foremost, the reading claims that the peculiar sound could have been caused by the calls of male and female ocra whales during a courtship ritual, since they inhabit the areas in where the strange noise was picked up. However, the professor refutes this point by stating that the whales, in fact, live near the surface of the ocean. As a result, there is no chance that the "quackers" came from ocra whales.

In addition, the article attributes the phenomenon to giant squids, which could not be detected with their soft bodies and no skeleton. Nonetheless, the professor casts doubt on this point by emphasizing that the bizarre sound disappeared after two decades, but the squids have always been around. For that reason, it is unreasonable to conclude that the phenomenon was caused by giant squids.

Last but not least, the author of the article indicates that the stray sounds from some state-of-the-art technology, which was designed not to be detected by sonar and used in foreign submarines, contributed to the phenomenon. In contrast, the professor rebuts this argument. The professor elaborates on this by explaining that the froglike sound changed the directions quickly and no engine noise was heard. That is to say, there was no way to build a submarine to be that fast in changing directions without noises from the engine.
