Both reading and listening are about the reasons of the appearance of Little Ice Age, which was a period of unusually cold temperatures in many parts of the world that lasted from about the year 1350 until 1900 C.E. The author of the reading states three reasons and the professor refutes the author's reasons.

First of all, based on the passage disruption of ocean currents was the cause of the Little Ice Age. The professor rebuts this point when he says this point can be true only about some part of the cold areas in Little Ice Age such as Europe and the US, but it doesn't explain why southern areas has been cooled down.

Second, the article states that volcanic eruptions could have been the factor that resulted in Little Ice Age. The lecturer disagrees with this idea and he claims that if volcanic eruptions were the reason, they should be much more stronger to cause the cold temperature. People should have seen visual signs such as grey snow or lack of sunlight. However, there were no signs like these. Therefor, volcanic eruptions couldn't have been contributed to the Ice Age.

Third, substantial decreases in human populations may have resulted in cooling of the climate indirectly. The professor contrasts with this hypothesize when he mentions that the decline in the population of humans didn't last that much and recovered again. Hence we can not assume that the decreased number of population leaded to cooling the cooled parts.
