Moai of Easter Island

Essay topics:

Moai of Easter Island

The reading and listening are both about “Moai of Easter Island” which they are monolithic statues of human portraits. The author of the reading believes that the construction of these statuses are the reason of collapsing Easter Island. The lecturer challenges the statements made by author. She is of the opinion that none of these reasons is correct.

First of all, the author claims that moving the statues from carved point to the main spot is done by tracks made from Island trees. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. She says that according to the research, a team of a dozen men replaced the statues with walking toward the desired point. So the author claim in this case is incorrect.

Secondly, the writer contends that the construction work completed for about several centuries. Therefor, it caused deforestation that had negative effects on the Island. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by asserting that construction was not the reason of the deforestation, the main reason of this were rats brought by boots that people of the Island first reached there. He elaborates on this by mentioning that palm seeds were eaten by rats so this caused no trees grew in the Island.

Finally, it is states in the article population declined as a result of claimed reason indicated in above paragraph. The author establishes that when Europeans explored the Island in the 18 century, the population of the Island had decreased to 2000 persons. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that when the Europeans first reached Island, the Island population of 2000 persons was the largest ever.
