One of the threats to endangered sea turtle species is the use of nets by commercial shrimp fishing boats When turtles get accidentally caught in the nets they cannot rise to the surface of the ocean to breathe and they die Some people suggest that th

This passage talks about a solution called Turtle Escape Devices(TED) in order to save turtles who are accidentally trapped into the net and die because could not rise to the surface to breathe. The writer criticized this kind of method in three aspects. But the speaker indicates that TEDs are still an effective way to protect turtles and rebut the writer's ideas.

First, the author proposes that it is rare for turtles to be captured by shrimper. However, the lecture pointed out that only in the country of United states, there are thousands of shrimpers wandering on the sea. Such number could not called rarely. In addition, turtles have already been endangered animals and their population is small now. So the accident catching can still cause serious result.

Second, the passage says alternative way could shorten the time to keep the turtle in traps alive. The speaker rebuts that this idea is just in theory, there is no evidence that government has the capacity to supervise all shrimper ships which are dispersedly located on the vase ocean. So this approach is proved hard to enforce.

Third, the author demonstrated that current TEDs are too small for some large turtle species to escape. The speaker restored this notion and proposed that is easy for us to modify the design of TEDs. Larger TEDs can be used in areas where big turtles settled. Therefore, the writer's last idea is proved unconvincing.
