The passage says that the problem of catching turtles accidentally by the shrimper net can not be solved by the TED device. TED is a device that provides a passage on the net so the turtles can escape to the water without being died. However, the professor claims that TED is a good device to save the endangered turtles from being died.
First of all, the passage avers that there are little turtles being trapped by nets so the TED device would make the shrimpers lose a high amount of shrimps, being escaped. However, the professor says that although catching turtles is rare, but there are thousands of shrimp boats. Therefore, the number of turtles being caught would be thousands too according to the numbers of shrimp boats, and that would cause a decline of turtle's populations.
Secondly, the passage claims that there are alternative methods rather than TED to save the turtle's life such as shortening the time of nets under water. However the professor says that it is so hard to monitor the time limit because it varies between the turtles individuals. That's why; it is unpossible for the shrimpers to manage the time, in which the turtle breath air.
Thirdly, the passage claims that the TED device is not effective for large species of turtles as they can escape easily through the passage. However the professor admits that most of turtles are small in size, but there are places that turtles are big, and that is not a big deal because TED device can be modified to fit any size of turtles. That's why; Ted device could save the large turtles' lives.
- One of the threats to endangered sea turtle species is the use of nets by commercial shrimp-fishing boats. When turtles get accidentally caught in the nets, they cannot rise to the surface of the ocean to breathe, and they die. Some people suggest that t 71
