The reading and the lecture are both about the Plain of jars, which had founded in Laos country with many different dimensions stones sizes from one to three meters. More specifically, in regard to the passage, the writer puts forth the idea that there are three possible theories for the purpose of using these containers. In the listening passage, the lecturer is quick to point out that there are some serious flaws in the reading claims. In fact, the professor believes that the goal from using these stones are mysterious and uncertain, and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the author of the reading states these jars have been used for the fermentation of food and drinks to keep them from any reactions with chemical changes. The article mentions that the jars for the first time were constructed to keep drinks for festivals, so the story may be true. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that this story is not true, because people at that time were using clay to keep any drink. Additionally, he points out that making stones take more effort and time, so why they would do it if they have the ability to make clay easily?
Secondly, the author suggests that jars were used for storing water because jaws has some dry seasons. In the article, it is said that these jars were located nearby trade routes where travelers can use them for drinking fresh water. Again, the speaker specifically asserts this idea by suggesting that these routes were located nearby rivers and streams. He goes on to say that no need for another source of fresh water for the travelers.
Finally, the author brings his argument to a close by suggesting that jar was used as tombs where people can stay after death and its large to keep anybody inside them. moreover, much jewelry and high-value metals were found inside these jars, so they believe these are from people after burying them inside the jars. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that these jars were not used as tombs because tombs need to be covered to keep the remains of the bodies from animals or air. He notes that these jars have not any cover on them or nearby them.
