Rembrandt
The article states that the painting is not a work by Rembrandt, but rather a derivative. However, the professor explains that the painting is by Rembrandt himself and refutes each of the points made in the reading.
Firstly, the article says that the clothing of the womanin the painting is inconsistent since she is a wearing a white linen cap, often worn by servants but also dorns a luxurious fur collar that the servant wouldn’t have been able to afford. The professor believes that there are certain flaws with the author’s position. He states that the fur collar was a later addition to the painting and was not present in the original piece made by Rembrandt. This finding was supported by an X-Ray and further analysis of the painting chemicals, which claim that the coat was added approximately 100 years after the original, with an intention to incease the painting’s intrinsic value.
Secondly, the reading posists that the light and shadow on the face and corresponding properties of the fur are inconsistent. Moreover, such a fallacy is not expected from Rembrnadt due to his mastery of light and shadow details. However, the professor points out that the fur collar was a later addition and the original painting consisted of a light coloured top. The reflective property of the lightly coloured garment made the lights and shadows seen on the face consistent with expectations.
Lastly, the excerpt contends that the back of the painting suggests that the painting was made on a panel of several pieces of wood gluaed together, which is unlike Rembrandt’s characteristsic of using a single wood panel. The professor opposes this point by saying that the original painting was made of a single piece of wood and a later modification to this painting added these extra pieces of wood to make it larger and grand. He goes on to say that the piece of wood used by Rembrandt in this painting is the same as the one use by him to make another self portait of his.
As you can see, the author and professor hold very different views on whether this painting was curated by Rembrandt or not.
