Sale of fossils

Essay topics:

Sale of fossils

The article states that rare and important fossils should not be sold to private ownership and provides three reasons for support. However, the professor believes that the sale of fossils to the private sector is a boon and refutes each of the reason’s made by the author.
First, the article states that the public would suffer if the sale was made to a private stakeholder since they wouldn’t allow everyone to view their collection. Had this not been the case, this fossil would be made available in a museum with open access to all. The professor believes that there are flaws with the author’s position by saying that the private entitites would increase the exposure of fossils since commercial fossil hunting leads to a larger availibilty of fossils for purchase by low level insititutions like public schools and libraries. These institutions can then display the fossils to the public.
Second, the passage posists that scientists would lose access to important fossils which can lead to them missing out on crucial discoveries about extinct life forms. However, the professor refutes the point made by the author and says that before each fossil is attached to its intrinsic value, it has to go through a thorough scientific examination. Therefore, even though the fossil lands in the hands of a private owner, it will pass through a scientist; not missing out on any important information.
Lastly, the article claims that commercial fossil collectors being untrained and uninterested will destroy that scientific evidence associated with the fossil they unearth. Moreover, he gives an example that commercial collectors might not pay attention to minor details around a fossil, which could potentially lead to the miss of a big finding. The professor opposes this point and says that if commercial players were excluded from fossil hunting, a large number of fossils would go undiscovered. Moreover, he suggests that it is better to have more fossils being discovered with lesser details rather than fossils not being found at all.
As you can see, the author and the professor have very different views on private collectors being involved in the selling and buying of fossils.
