The reading and the lecture are both about the decrease in the population of sea animals called otters. The author of the reading passage feels that there are three explanations for the otter's deduction. However, the lecturer challenges these points. He is of the opinion that these explanations are faulty.
To begin with, the author asserts that the water in the Alaskan coast was contaminated namely because of the oil rigs which lowers the otter's immune systems, resulting in death. On the other hand, this concept is refuted by the lecturer which suggests that predators are to be the main cause for the death of otters. Additionally, he says that there are insufficient of otter's dead bodies on the beach and if otters are eaten away by predators, how can the otter's bodies are left floating on the water.
Another point the article puts on emphasis is that the reason why pollution is to be the cause is because of the fact which shows the decline of other animals as well. However, the professor contends this by saying otters eat whales for survival. But as whales have been abolished by the action of human poachers, otters had to eat other small mammals instead. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that because otters have no options but to hunt tiny animals only, the population for other animals had to be dropped.
Finally, in contrast to the reading passage’s claim that the population of otters are different in places, in one place the numbers are stable while in others are remarkably declining as a result of ocean current, it is accentuated in the lecture that orcas cannot enter the shallow rocky to eat otters.
