Essay topics:

Soon technology will provide smart cars that virtually drives themselves. A computer in the car determines the speed and route to the desired destination. The computer is in continuous contact with a global positioning system and other technologies that will provide extremely accurate information about the location of the car, other cars on the road, congestion, accidents, and so forth. The human driver will be little more than a passenger. Smart cars promise to make driving safer, quicker, and less expensive.

First of all, smart cars will prevent many accidents, thereby saving lives. The cars will be equipped with a variety of sensors that very accurately detect cars and other obstacles in their path, and they will have automatic programs that control braking and turning to avoid collisions. Given the hundreds of accidents that occur on highways daily, it is clear that humans do apoor job of avoiding accidents and that computer control would be a great improvement.

Second, with the wide use of smart cars, traffic problems will practically disappear. These computer-controlled cars can follow each other closely, even at high speeds. Today commuting by car can take hours a day. So the increased speed of smart cars will be a great benefit, welcomed by many people who commute by car.

Finally, smart cars will bring a reduction in the costs of driving. Because smart cars are programmed to drive the most direct routes, car owners will have to spend less money on repairs and replacement parts. Expensive items such as brakes, tires, and transmissions will last much longer in smart cars than in other cars.

The reading raises the issue that modern technology makes it possible to drive a car without a driver, using only sensors and algorithms. In addition, by increasing the number of smart cars on a road, drivers will be able to save their money, time and lives.

However, this statement is strongly questioned by the lecture which provides drastically different evidences and contends that the disadvantages, of switching to robotic control of the car, far outweigh the advantages.

The first point that the professor uses to cast doubt on the reading is that high-tech equipment, which checks the distance to obstacles on the road and car’s brake system, will help avoid accidents. this point is challenged by lecturer, she says that smart cars constantly get into an accident. Furthermore, if the distance between cars decreases, there will be more participants in car’s collision.

Another point that the professor uses to cast doubt on the reading is the problem with congestions will be solved. The professor shows that no connection between speed of car traffic and distance between them, because vacant space on the road will be occupied by a new member. In contrast, the reading passage believes that smart cars will create an opportunity to shorten interval between cars on the road and increase the speed of traffic. So, the lecture totally disagrees with the point made in the reading.

Finally, the author mentioned that cut the amount of collisions and using comfortable itinerary by car’s computer will be able to save driver’s money usually spent on new details and gas. Meanwhile, the lecturer explains that smart cars need more high technology details, moreover, they cost more money than the same on a mechanical cars.

that is how lecturer approves that smart cars bring more trouble for their owners.
