Essay topics:

Summarize the lecture, being sure to explain how it cast doubt on specific pints in the reading lecture.

The lecture and the passage present opposite views regarding the issue whether an asteroid will be the best colonization place or not. The passage support the idea with three reasons, while the lecture points out that it is not practical to do so since each of the reasons the passage provides has several downsides.

First, the passage says that the low gravity on an asteroid makes it safer for a spaceship to land on the asteroid than on Mars. It also allows a spacecraft to carry more equipment. However, the lecture indicates that the low gravity presents health problems for colonists in long term by using the astronauts as an example. Even if the astronauts just spend one month in a low-gravity environment, such as a spaceship, they lose muscle mass and bone density.

Second, the passage argues that it is extremely profitable to mine the valuable metals, which are rare on earth but abundant on asteroids. On the contrary, the lecture is against the idea. The lecture says it may seem profitable but in fact it is not, because more additional factors need to be considered. The first factor is cost. Transportation and supporting colonization and mining may cost a huge amount of money, thus the profit will decrease. Another thing is that the market price of these precious valuable metal is likely to decline if they were brought back to earth in large quantities as the supply increases.

Finally, the passage states that since the some of the asteroids come near the Earth's orbit periodically and are closer to Earth than Mars and Moon are, it will be a lot easier and affordable to travel to an asteroid back and forth than to ravel to Mars, whose one way trip alone take two years. But the lecture says it is not true, for in some cases it will be difficult to return beacuse the asteroids have unusual orbits. They may come close to Earth at one time and go at a great distance at another, even farther than the Mars, therefore the travel expenses will still be large.
