There are some surprising beliefs about elephants that are mentioned in the reading which are clearly confirmed to be wrong as the lecturer tells us. The three different behaviors that are pointed out in the reading are: first, knowing that they will die soon when they are old, second is to benefit an artisitic ability to paint things they observe in their environment, and the last is the fear they have for encountering mice.
As we hear from the lecture, the reason of existence of such places called "elephant graveyards" is not what that is mentioned in the reading. They elephants will not leave the herd to go somewhere to die alone but they will leave to find some softer vegetations that be more chewable as their teeth are old and not as strong as the younger members in the herd. So they have to go near the lakes and rivers to find some softer food to chew and subsequently they will pass away in those locations.
The lecturer believes that the painting ability to be a trick by humans. Humans can make some reacting patterns by touching the ears of elephants while they are keeping a brush by their trunks. So they are not aware of they are painting and they just modify the movement of the brush in response to the tactile actions made by a person on their ears.
The last point which is about the fear of mice is described by the lecturer to be due to the lack of knowledge of what are those creatures. It is proven right by mentioning the elephants in the zoos which are familiar with mice and thus are not afraid to face them.
