threes theories to explain the argument that Antarctica was as much as 100°C warmer, supporting richer ecosystem than it is today

The reading material states threes theories to explain the argument that Antarctica was as much as 100°C warmer, supporting richer ecosystem than it is today, while the speaker claims that the theories are too unconvincing to support the reading's argument.

First, the writer mentions that the evidence of pollen grains might prove that Antarctica 15 millions years ago was warm enough to ensure plants to grow normally. The lecturer does not think this theory is watertight. According to her, pollen grains were light enough to be carried by wind to thousands of kilometers away; therefore, the pollen grains could be produced by the plants from nearby places, like South America and New Zealand, and traveled into the Antarctica with wind or ocean water.

Another important point made in the passage is that the climbing level of CO2 might be caused by the confirmed major volcanic activity during the Middle Miocene, and CO2 is linked to the climate warming. The professor refutes this flawy argument by mentioning the fact that the recent research shows that the CO2 level was much lower than it is today. Thus, the Antarctica 15 million years ago may not undergo the climate warming.

Finally, the author asserts that deuterium and increased rainfall might have something to do with the high temperature in Antarctica. The professor casts doubts on this weak argument. According to her, different plants have various capacity of absorbing the deuterium; therefore, it is possible that certain types of plants in Antarctica might have the ability to absorb the large amount of deuterium. In this way, the amount of deuterium could indicate the increased rainfall not to mention the climate warming.
