Undoubtedly, protecting ecosystems from harmful species like cane toads is a controversial topic among scientists. More specifically, the writer puts forth on the idea that there are some ways to prevent cane toads from spread. however the professor points out that there are some serious flaws with the writer's claim. She more or less addresses the problem with each point made in the reading.
First of all, the writer claims that building a national fence can prevent cane toads to spread. He thinks a fence that blocks the advance of the toads will prevent them from moving into those parts of Australia that they have not yet colonized. But the professor refutes with this idea and said, even if cane toads can not get through the fence, there are rivers and streams that can carry young tods or their eggs to the other side, and once they're on the other side, they will establish their colonies there.
Secondly, the reading states that volunteers can easily caught tods by simple traps and even captured them by hand. The professor, not surprisingly though believes that untrained people can make mistakes in distinguishing tods from some types of frogs that are very similar to them, people may capture these kinds of frogs or even poisoning ones instead of tods which can be harmful for their health.
Finally, the author wraps up the topic by claiming that researchers are developing a disease-causing virus to control the cane toad populations. This virus can be used to harm only the cane toads and kill them. Then again, the professor stays on the other side of the argument and says that this virus can reach to the central America and harm tods over there too, and since cane tods are national species there, it would make a ecological disaster.
