TOEFL T P O 22 - Integrated Writing Task

In this set of materials, the reading and the listening are both discussing ethanol wherein the reading states that fossil fuel gas should be replaced by ethanol and it provides three arguments of support. However, the professor notes that there are still issues with ethanol. More than that, he challengers each of the author's points.
First, the writer of the reading claims that drivers who use ethanol as a fuel rather than gasoline will get better gas mileage. Therefore, they save money on gas. The lecturer refutes this point by explaining that the cost of the ethanol is very expensive due to the fact that the cost of transform, convert and store the ethanol. Hence, the cost is rising not only for the government but also for people who use ethanol in their vehicles as fuel.
Secondly, the reading states that the American economy will get more benefits by using ethanol. However, the professor points out that using this kind of fuel, ethanol, in skyrocket or as the main fuel is going to raise the price of corns. Furthermore, the professor believes that high corn's price is affecting people and the economy.
Finally, the author of the reading says that ethanol is environmentally friendly. The speaker of the lecture opposes this point by mentioning that both gasoline and ethanol release the co2. Moreover, he explains that since more farmlands are created to support the demands for more corn, more carbon will be absorbed by the land.
In conclusion, the three points that made in the lecture contrast with the reading. The first, second and third points in the lecture demonstrate that using ethanol instead of gasoline is in doubt. Additionally, both the writer and lecturer hold conflicting views about ethanol.
