TOEFL TPO 01 - Integrated Writing Task

The reading passage claims that a four-day worker would be better than a worker who works 5 days a week.

To begin with, the reading passage claims a shortened workweek would increase company profits since the employees would have more efficient if they have the time to relax, and the company would pay the same amount of salary to hire additional workers; however, the speaker rebuts this argument that the company will probably spend much more money on training the employees, providing medical insurance, more supplies and space to work.
Moreover, the author maintains the four-day work policy would decrease the unemployment rate. The lecturer casts doubt on this that the company would raise their expectation to the employees which would make the job experience unpleasant, and the employees would have to work overtime to reach that expectation.
Lastly, the writer indicates that the employees who work four days a week would get an exchange for more free time to spend with their families and interests. Yet the professor suggests in contrary that the employees' economic status would lower their life quality and hinder their job career because they are only getting 80 percent of the original salary. In addition, the companies would prefer the five days workers instead of four-day workers when hiring a manager, so when cutting off employees, they would most likely to lose their job.
